Fuel Cost Calculator
Calculate fuel cost and consumption for any trip.
TL;DR — Fuel Cost Calculator: A fuel cost calculator estimates the total fuel needed and the cost of fuel for a planned journey, based on distance, vehicle efficiency and current fuel price. Cal44 supports both metric (L/100 km) and imperial (MPG) efficiency formats and any currency.
What is the Fuel Cost Calculator?
A fuel cost calculator estimates the total fuel needed and the cost of fuel for a planned journey, based on distance, vehicle efficiency and current fuel price. Cal44 supports both metric (L/100 km) and imperial (MPG) efficiency formats and any currency.
How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator
- Enter the trip distance.
- Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency (L/100 km or MPG).
- Enter the fuel price per litre or gallon.
- Read the total fuel needed and the total trip cost.
Formula
Fuel needed (L) = Distance (km) × Consumption (L/100 km) ÷ 100 Fuel needed (gal) = Distance (mi) ÷ MPG Cost = Fuel needed × Price per unit
Convert between MPG and L/100 km: L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US gallon).
Worked example
600 km trip at 7.5 L/100 km, fuel at €1.80/L. Fuel = 600 × 7.5 ÷ 100 = 45 L. Cost = 45 × 1.80 = €81.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert MPG to L/100 km?
L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US gallon) or 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK gallon). 30 MPG (US) ≈ 7.84 L/100 km.
Is highway or city efficiency more accurate?
Highway efficiency is usually 15–25% better than city. For mixed trips, use the manufacturer's combined figure or your real-world average.
Does the calculator account for tolls or detours?
No — only fuel. Add toll costs separately for total trip cost.
How can I improve fuel efficiency?
Smooth driving (avoid hard acceleration), correct tyre pressure, removing roof racks when not needed, and reducing weight all help. Each can yield 3–10% better economy.
Does the calculator handle EVs?
It's designed for liquid fuel. For EVs, use kWh/100 km × electricity price per kWh in place of L/100 km × fuel price.
